Discussion Essay: "Computers have made the world a better place..."

Nowadays, computers are really important and necessary machines. The main part of the industries depends on them. The use of the internet is becoming more popular between young people. Now almost everybody has got a computer at home.

The computers have more advantages: you can chat with a friend in the other part of the world easily, cheaply and quickly, you can send and receive e-mails, you can find information, download music or films, listen music, watch DVD’s... So these are really strong points of computers, because they help us living better.

But on the other hand, they have some disadvantages too: we can find that there are a lot of people who are always on the PC and they spend the whole day on internet. Nowadays children don’t go out to play, they stay at home in front of the screen and internet is a way to make childhood shorter.

From my point of view, I agree that computers have made the world a better place, because it’s easy to think that nowadays a lot of people are vitiated to the PC’s games and they don’t have a social life, but we have to take care to the point that everything in extremes is bad. In my opinion the list of positive things is much longer than the list of negatives points. So I know that computers are a good thing for our development.

1st Oral Presentation: "Keira Christina Knightley"

Keira Christina Knightley was born 26 March 1985.
She is one of the most famous actreses in Hollywood. She began her career as a child and came to international prominence in 2003 after co-starring in the films Bend It Like Beckham and Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.
As of 2008, Forbes claims Knightley to be the second highest paid actress in Hollywood (behind Cameron Diaz), having reportedly earned $32 million in 2007, making her the only non-American person on the list of highest paid actors or actresses.
Biography
Early life

Knightley was born in Teddington, Greater London, England. Her father is English and her mother is Scottish and of half Welsh ancestry. She has an elder brother, Caleb, who was born in 1979. Knightley lived most of her life in Richmond, attending Teddington School and Esher College. Knightley has dyslexia, but nevertheless was successful in school and was thus permitted to acquire a talent agent and pursue an acting career.
She requested an agent as early as the age of three but got one when she turned six, from her mother as a reward for studying hard. Knightley has noted that she was "single-minded about acting" during her childhood.

Personal life

Knightley, who lives in London, is involved with her Pride and Prejudice co-star Rupert Friend. Knightley has stated she has no plans to be married in the near future. She previously dated Northern Irish fashion model Jamie Dornan, as well as actor Del Synnott, who, according to some reports, attempted suicide after their relationship ended, although Synnott and Knightley deny these claims.
She has denied rumors she is anorexic , although after her appearance at the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest premiere led to media speculation that her extremely slender figure was due to an eating disorder, she noted that her family has a history of anorexia.

Keira then sued the Daily Mail after they claimed she lied about having anorexia; the article said that a teenage girl died from anorexia, indicating that Knightley's physical appearance may have influenced her in some way. In July 2006, Knightley said she has become a workaholic. As a result, Knightley may take a one year break from acting to travel and focus on her personal life.

Knightley is a lifelong supporter of football team West Ham United F.C. and watches games in her local pub whenever possible. She has said that her favourite book is War and Peace and her favourite film is All About Eve. She is a fan of the English soap opera Emmerdale.

The joke: "Computer Diagnosis"

One day Bill complained to his friend that his elbow really hurt. His friend suggested that he go to a computer at the drug store that can diagnose anything quicker and cheaper than a doctor.

''Simply put in a sample of your urine and the computer will diagnose your problem and tell you what you can do about it. It only costs $10." Bill figured he had nothing to lose, so he filled a jar with a urine sample and went to the drug store. Finding the computer, he poured in the sample and deposited the $10. The computer started making some noise and various lights started flashing. After a brief pause out popped a small slip of paper on which was printed: "You have tennis elbow. Soak your arm in warm water. Avoid heavy lifting. It will be better in two weeks."

Later that evening while thinking how amazing this new technology was and how it would change medical science forever, he began to wonder if this machine could be fooled. He mixed together some tap water, a stool sample from his dog and urine samples from his wife and daughter. To top it off, he masturbated into the concoction. He went back to the drug store, located the machine, poured in the sample and deposited the $10. The computer again made the usual noise and printed out the following message:

"Your tap water is too hard. Get a water softener. Your dog has worms. Get him vitamins. Your daughter is using cocaine. Put her in a rehabilitation clinic. Your wife is pregnant with twin girls. They aren't yours. Get a lawyer. And if you don't stop jerking off, your tennis elbow will never get better."

Interview: "Gudjohnsen: Guardiola has changed my life"

When you're preparing a game, you now get more information about the opponent than last year?
We don't get more, we just get it in an different way.

Guardiola is more demanding than Rijkaard?
No, not at all. Pep is not demanding, Pep is doing his job. He pays a lot of attention to the details of the opponent. Where can we hurt them, what about corner kicks, set pieces... We're well-informed about the threats and the opportunities.

Guardiola keeps on reminding you of Mourinho, like you said during the pre-season?
Yes he does, but not as a person! I was talking about his style of coaching. Both are crazy about football. Besides that, Pep has been a great player and he knows how the players feel cause he felt it too. I was actually talking about the details. Pep is as focused on details as Mourinho.

What about the mentality?
They're also alike. They both work very hard. They are quality coaches who are always on top of the group. They have clear lines. You can relax sometimes, but you also should know when things are getting serious.

You think the team is more competitive than last year?
Could be. It should be clear that we won't win every game with a big goal difference. What happened over the last weeks, was a bit exaggerated. 5-1 or 6-0 can be misleading.

You thought you would leave the club three months ago?
At the end of last season it was almost sure that I would go. I had decided that I would leave because of what I felt and because of the feelings I got from the club and the fans. But everything changed when I talked with Guardiola during the pre-season. Guardiola has changed my life. He surprised me. He said: "Look, Guddy, I believe in you, but you have to convince me and give everything during the pre-season". That changed my way of thinking and I didn't listen to any offers from then on because I wanted to focus on Barça.

You're family must have been happy with the decision to stay...
I've always said that our live here is excellent. We have everything, but I'm a football player and I don't want to stay here just for the good life. I will have time for that after my career.

New 4: "The Aegis aegypti mosquito"

- RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -

Health officials in Brasil say that an outbreak of dengue fever has infected more than 32,000 people in Rio de Janeiro state and claimed at least 47 lives.

City officials have said that the outbreak is not an epidemic but the number of deaths this year already has outstripped the number of fatalities in all of 2002.

The Federal Health Minister of Brasil says he is already treating the situation in Rio, where about 51 new cases of the disease are reported every hour, as an epidemic.Temporao says the government will open a crisis center in Rio state on Monday to coordinate efforts between the federal and state government and the armed force to fight the disease, which is borne by the Aegis aegypti mosquito

New 3: "Torres desperate for Spain glory"

Torres said that he is desperate for a win in euro 2008

In his champions league carrer this year he saw himself loosong to Chelsea 4-3 but he took home a glorious 33 goals.

"The semi-finals of the Champions League have left a bad taste in the mouth," said the 24-year-old frontman.

"Now Euro 2008 is the last opportunity to finish with a title of this nature.
Torres said that he is confident with his team with players like Sergio Ramos, Xavi , Casillas and many others.

He still cant understand why Spain are such under aichevers because they have a lot of talent and wealth.

"I have a lot of confidence following this season, and with a lot of desire to be able to finish the season with a title," he said.

New 2: "Baracks and Obamas born in Kenya"

Barack's Obama popularity has sparked a new baby-naming craze in Kenya. More than half of the males babies born in Kisumu the area where Obama's father came from, the day of the U.S. elections were named Barack.
In Swahili they also name the babies Obama, which means "blessed one". Many parents called their newborn daughters Michelle, the name of Obama's wife.
People from Kenya were thrilled with Barack Obama's election victory and most of them celebrated in the streets. He has become a national hero there.

There are parents that name their children after actors, pop stars or sports heroes. For example, Lewis Hamilton was named after the U.S. Olympic gold medallist Carl Lewis. But it's more unusual that people named their children after politicians. It might be interesting to know if someone called his baby George Bush. There is a case of a mother who had twins (one girl and one boy) on November the 5th, and she called them Barack and Michelle. She confessed that she made up her mind to name them long before the elections, and even if Obama hadn't won, he would have done the same. She thinks that these names will bring her children success in life.

New 1: "Men more attracted to women in red"

A new study suggests that men are more physically attracted to a woman if she wears red clothes. The report from New York’s University of Rochester conducted different experiments to find out the effects of colour on human relationships. Researchers asked more than 100 men to give a score to photographs of women. The men had to rate the women according to how pretty they were, how much the men would like to kiss them, their intelligence and how kind they looked. They also had to provide details of what kind of date they would like to take the women on. The results showed that that the women in the pictures who wore red scored higher and were more likely to be taken on an expensive date. The data showed the colour red made no impact on the scores for intelligence and kindness.
The research was carried out by psychology professor Andrew Elliot and his team. He said: “It's fascinating to find that something as [ever-present] as color can be having an effect on our behaviour without our awareness.” This is one of the first scientific studies to look at the effects of colour on human behaviour. For most of us, however, it will come as no surprise that red is the colour of love and passion. Look no further than red roses on Valentine’s Day and the popularity of deep red lipsticks. Elliot says men may be genetically programmed to be attracted to females wearing red. He said certain apes also display such behaviour. Women in the study did not rate the pictured females as prettier, neither did they have the chance to rate men wearing different colours.

The Film: Gangs of New York

In 1846, as waves of Irish immigrants poured into the New York neighborhood of Five Points, a number of citizens of British and Dutch heritage who were born in the United States began making an open display of their resentment toward the new arrivals. William Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), better known as "Bill the Butcher" for his deadly skill with a knife, bands his fellow "Native Americans" into a gang to take on the Irish immigrants; the immigrants in turn form a gang of their own, "The Dead Rabbits," organized by Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson). After an especially bloody clash between the Natives and the Rabbits leaves Vallon dead, his son goes missing; the boy ends up in a brutal reform school before returning to the Five Points in 1862 as Amsterdam (Leonardo DiCaprio). Amsterdam also finds himself falling for Jenny Everdeane (Cameron Diaz), a beautiful but street-smart thief who was once involved with Bill. Opinion Essay: Is humour necessary to survive?

The humour is necessary to survive because do you think when you knew a person which always is sad and never smiles, I believe that you will think that he or she is a really boring person. In my opinion, humour is really necessary to survive and life will be really harder if it disappears.

There are different reasons:

The first reason is that humour is a different way to contact with the people, and it helps us to know new persons.

Other reason is that it gives some fun in our lives. Nowadays, we are living in a really stressed society and we always need a bit of distraction and amusement.
The last reason is that it helps us to overcome the hard situations of life. These problems will be bigger if we couldn’t take them with a bit of humour.
So, we have to be grateful with the people who always try to make us smile. I think we can find these persons in every class and they help us to survive each day of school. And, as I said before, we have to take care of humour because if it disappears, fun, amusement, happiness… will disappear with it.

Too much importance is given to talking exams at school. Do you agree?

Nowadays, schools give more importance to exams than to evaluating students' general pregress. In my opinion the exams have got too much importance.

At first there are really important things that the exams like homework, the work in the class, the projects...
But the exam system can be unfair. As a result, some students have fewer opportunities for their future.
However, the exams are important for the avaluation of the students.
But they wouldn't have some importance.

In conclusion, I agree with the importance of exams but they wouldn't have some importance.

A great invention: the TV.

For my opinion, the television is a great invention for the humans.

Television is a widely used telecommunication medium for broadcasting and receiving live, moving greyscale or color images with sound. The word is derived from mixed Latin and Greek roots, meaning "far sight": Greek tele, far, and Latin vision, sight.

The origins of what would become today's television system can be traced back to the discovery of the photoconductivity of the element selenium by Willoughby Smith in 1873, the invention of a scanning disk by Paul GottliebNipkow in 1884, and Philo Farnsworth's Image dissector in 1927.

On March 25, 1925, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird gave a demonstration of televised silhouette images in motion at Selfridge's Department Store in London. In 1927, Baird transmitted a signal over 438 miles of telephone line between London and Glasgow. In 1928, Baird's company (Baird Television Development Company / Cinema Television) broadcast the first transatlantic television signal, between London and New York, and the first shore-to-ship transmission.

The composition.

I don't agree with the idea. In my opinion, we have learnt to destroy the world with the pollution and more causes.

At first, we have to recycle every day of the week. We have to put some of rubbish in the different bins.
We have to recycle so as not polluted the world, because if we don't recycle, the world will be ill!
At second, we have to use the energy of the Sun, the energy of the water (rivers, lakes and sees) and the energy of the wind. However, we use energies like oil or coal, but we wouldn't use these energies if we didn't change the world.

Then we have to respect the water of our planet because if it disappears, a lot of living being will be wipe out!! We have to use the minimum litres of water.

In conclusion, I would say that we had to change more things of our life because we learn to respect the world. If we made more effort, the world will be a better place for everybody.

The 3rd Oral Presentation!

The racism

The racism is the action and manifestation that recognize that people of different races are of a different value. Is prejudice and discrimination based on a race.
We can say that the racism appeared from the ethnocentrism and it was useful to justify the imperialism, the slavery and the genocide of a lot of villages.
The racial discrimination is to refuse to associate with people of different race and give them less rights.
There are really groups and we going to talk about the two more important groups: the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazis.

- Ku Klux Klan (KKK)

They are organizations of USA that they predict the supremacy of the white race, the anti-Semitism, the racism, the anti-Catolicism, the homophobia and the nativism. This organizations use to resort to he terrorism, violence and the intimidator actions like the cross burning.

The first organization of the Klan was born in 1865 for veterans of the Confederate Force of USA. The organization adopted quickly violent methods to get their objectives.
The Klan interrupted the religious sessions of the black societies and they invaded the places of the community to robe their weapons to disarm the black veterans of the Civil War.
There was a reaction that takes the organization to end on 1870.

The second organization of the Klan was born in 1915. They proved the power of “ “. They were 4-5 million people approximately.
In 1920, a part of the Klan, the Black Legion, had a big activity in the USA. They wore black uniforms and they were the most violent of the Klan.
The Black Legion even though they killed the socialists and the communists.
The popularity of the Klan started to go down in the Second World War because some members of the organization helped the Nazi Germany.

On recent times the Ku Klux Klan still exists.
On 2005 there were 3 thousand members on the Klan.

- The nazism

The nazism is the form of government that Germany was directed from 1933 to 1945, and the ideology and the politic movement that was related to fascism. It was the most radical and violent type of government for the racist considerations.

The word “nazi” was created for the first advertising minister Joseph Goebbels to reefer to the members of his politician (NSDAP).
Then the word “nazi” started to be used with all that was related with the nazism ideology.

The ideology appeared in Germany on the 30s and Adolph Hitler was the main representative. He was the defensor of the imperialism and he agreed with the racism and the violence.

An other politic movement is the neonazism, it’s the politic movement of the extreme right that has got the objective to reactive the beginnings of nazism.

But nowadays in more countries there are strict laws against the nazism and the neonazism because it’s considered a crime.

The international communities efforts for the human rights were not useful.
Nowadays the racial discrimination and the violence also exist in some parts of the world. A lot of people continue being discriminated for their skin colour.

The native towns are one of the discriminated group. The immigrants and the politic refugees are some groups that haven’t got their human rights respected.

Racists actions:

1. In the seventh of October of 2007 a train of Barcelona there was a racist accident with a latinoamerican girl. A young “skin” man hit and maltreat her.
There were two immigrant boys in the train who didn’t move and didn’t help the girl because they were frightened.

(Now we will do another example of violence in Paris)

2. After the match between France and Israel, the extreme supporters of France attacked the supporters of the Israel with racist words.
But the policeman stopped the action.

3. After the London attempt the musulman community has been attacked with some racists actions. Some cultural places or temples have been burnt. And now the mosques have got more protection.

The 2nd Oral Presentation!

SCOTLAND

Hello!

We are going to talk about a nation of United Kingdom, Scotland. This nation is in the Great Britain. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, but the largest city is Glasgow.
The official language is English, but also speak Gaelic and Scots.
The history of Scotland started around ten thousand years, until at present.
The Government is constitutional monarchy.
The patron of Scotland is St. Andrew.
The money that they use is pound sterling.

Well… Now I will talk a little bit about culture.
There are an important artistic activity, both Musical and Literature, and sport also has a long tradition in Scotland.

First, The music:

The traditional Scottish instrument is the bagpipes, in particular the one from the Highlands. The Clarsach or Celt harp, violins and accordions are also Scottish instruments especially the last two which are part of the traditional Scottish Dances.

Second, the TV:

The national broadcaster is BBC Scotland (BBC Alba in Gaelic), a constituent part of the British Broadcasting Corporation, the publicly-funded broadcaster of the United Kingdom.

Third, Literature:

Robert Burns is considerate the national poet, their much of his writing is also in English and in a "light" Scots dialect which is more accessible to a wider audience.
Another writer is James Matthew Barrie who is the author of Peter Pan.

Forth, Sports:

Sport also plays a big part in the Scottish culture as the country holds many sporting events. The Football and Ruby are the more important sports of Scotland.
Scotland has its own national governing bodies, such as the Scottish Football Association (the second oldest national football association in the world) and the Scottish Rugby Union.
Some varieties of football have been practiced in Scotland, for various centuries: the first dates from 1424. Associated football is the national sport in Scotland; in fact the Scottish Cup is the most ancient trophy in the world. The twice big teams in Scotland are Celtic of Glasgow and Rangers of Glasgow, that they are rivals of the same city, because Celtic are Catholics and Rangers are Protestants.
Another Sport is Golf; St. Andrews is the birthplace of golf and the oldest golf course in the world. Is almost a place of worship for golfers.

There are other elements of sport in the Highland Games like mountains games, and some Celt sports like curling or shinty. Cricket is also a popular sport in Scotland with the team having qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup on three occasions and having co-hosted the world cup in 1999.

And finally the most characteristic of Scotland is her dress: the traditional Scottish wear is the Kilt also called Scottish Skirt which offends the Scottish if you say it.

The Formal letter!

18th January 2008

The headmistress
IES Castelló d’Empúries
Carrer del Rentador, 6
Catselló d’Empúries

Dear Mis. Pintó

We are writing this letter to tell you about the good and bad things of the IES Castelló d’Empúries. On the one hand we want to tell you that we are very happy in this high school, but on the other hand you also know that there are bad things and we are writing this letter to help you to improve these little things.

We are so proud about the level of the high school; our centre is one of the best of the Alt Empordà because a lot of people pass the selectivity with good marks.

We think that the computers and Beemer in class is a great initiative, because we can learn by using technology, also we can show our work and oral presentations.

First, years ago we don’t need more space, but now the new part of the centre helps us to study more calmly. The aspect of the centre is cold, but it is a nice atmosphere for studying because there aren’t colors but there is a lot of light.

We prefer the new technique of English class, because we have learned more, and we can speak with freedom.

The centre in general is correct because there aren’t problematic people and the people try to learn. The atmosphere is good, and this is thanks to the work of the Headmistress and the rest of the teachers.

You and we know that nothing in the life is perfect, for this reason we are going to tell you about the bad things of the centre.
In our opinion there are a lot of good teachers, but also there are teachers that don’t explain naturally and we don’t understand anything and they don’t do anything to explain better.

Be careful with the problems of the space if you want the high to grow.

We are proud to study in this beautiful centre and we encourage to you go on in the same way.

Thanks for all tese years.
Yours faithfully

Frankenstein: differences between the film and the book!

One difference between the film and the booh is that in the film the monster pull the heart of Elizabeth and in the book, the monster strangles the girl.
An other difference is that in the film Elizabeth has brown hair, and in the book she has blond hair.
In the book Justine was soprised and in the film the government kills Justine.
In the book Victor destroyed the female monster when he was building her for the monster, and in the film, the female monster comited suicide.
In the book, the monster has yellow skin and in the film the monster has a normal colour skin.
In the book, the monster builds a great fire and lies down on it to die, and in the book he died on the ice.
I think that the video is better than the book, because the murders are more terrifying.
In general, it's a good story!!

The 1st Oral Presentation!

Hi!

I’m Jordi and I will talk about one off my hobbies, the handball.

History

Handball is a team sport where two teams of seven players each pass and bounce de ball trying to throw in the goal of the opposing team. This sport is played on a court forty meters long by twenty meters wide. The goals are surrounded by a near-semicircular line what is six meters away from the goal. There is a dashed near-semicircular line that is nine meters from the goal. Only the defending goalkeeper is allowed to step inside the six meters perimeter, though any player may to catch and touch the ball in the air within it.

In the team, there are two wingmen, a center-left and a center-right, a center and a pivot.

The team handball game was formed by the end of the 19th century in northern Europe, primarily Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The game has been played internationally since the 1920s.

In Catalonia, this sport was formed in Granollers. In the actuality, there are two important handball teams in Catalunya, BH Granollers and my favourite team, FC Barcelona.

My favourite player are Juanin, he is the left-wingman in FC Barcelona. There are the best. He is very agile and fast.

But I played in the CH Esplais of Castelló d’Empúries since 1999.It was born in 1996. It is 11 years. I’m a wingman. In this season, we have won one match and we have lost two match for one goal. And the last Saturday we lost for 5 goals. We coached four hours in the week, two hours at Tuesday and too two at Friday. And the evenings Saturdays we play the handball match. This Saturday we don’t play.Every year the club organize meetings that every body can participate. And the last meeting my team was seventh.

Now, I will present my team.

Joaquím: he is the goalkeeper, he has good reflexes.

Bernard, Batlle and Andreu: they are the pivots. Bernard and Batlle take advantage for his height. And Andreu are short but is fast.

Èric, Marcos, Robin, Adrià and I: we are the wingmen, we are agile and fast.

Pont, Gerard and Eudald: they are the left and right centers. They are high and have got a good jump.

David and Galí: they are the centers, they are fast and they organize the team.

And this is my handball team. We are round the bend but we are the best.

The End!

The horror story!

THE PHANTOM OF THE HAYSTOCK

One day, I and my friends were in the hay stock. Every body were digging and we found human boons. Some person said that in this hay stock before was a graveyard some others said that before hay stock was a house and this boons was of one man. And every body were joking that spirits of this died in the night get up of them grave and they killed the persons that were in the hay stock.
In the night we were talking in the hay stock went some body knocked the door. We were frighten. Suddenly on man appeared, he wore trousers, raincoat and a hat. He was a strange man. We didn’t know him about he knew our names and life. He was in the hay stock one hour also he said that he had been in this hay stock in the past, he was telling his life and his deather. In this moment we said nothing and the man went out the hay stock, he said that he had went his house.
Later we was searching his name and his life in internet. We found information about him and that he was life in Castelló and hi died murder in the hay stock in 1936.
